PEAK SEASON

  • The peak season dates are as follows:
    • 1 July - 30 September
  • Tour departure during the peak season will be on a Seat-In-Coach basis only.
  • The departures on a Seat-In-Coach basis during the peak season are only available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (3 times per week).

Your journey begins in Kuching, leading you to Nanga Sumpa, where you will connect with the local Iban community and explore the rainforest in search of orang utans. About The Location

Batang Ai
Just 275 kilometres from Kuching, Batang Ai is a treasure trove of biodiversity and cultural heritage. This remarkable region is home to Sarawak's oldest Iban settlements, dating back to the 15th century. At its heart lies Batang Ai National Park, with its sprawling tropical rainforests and a stunning 24-square-kilometre lake created by the Batang Ai hydroelectric reservoir. The park offers a lush sanctuary for wildlife like orangutans, gibbons, and hornbills. Visitors can explore the pristine rainforest, experience traditional Iban culture firsthand, and soak in the serene beauty of the lake.

Nanga Sumpa
Tucked deep in the Batang Ai region, Nanga Sumpa is an Iban village that promises a truly authentic cultural experience. Accessible via a scenic longboat ride upriver from Batang Ai Lake, this charming village serves as a gateway to the surrounding rainforest. Visitors can stay at Nanga Sumpa Lodge, the base for exciting activities such as visiting traditional Iban longhouses, trekking through the jungle, and exploring nearby rivers. Lubok Kasai
About 30 to 45 minutes by longboat from Nanga Sumpa lies Lubok Kasai, a secluded jungle camp on the peaceful banks of the Lalang River. Perfect for those seeking an immersive rainforest experience, Lubok Kasai offers opportunities for wildlife spotting, jungle trekking, and moments of quiet relaxation by the river. Known as a prime habitat for orangutans, the area offers visitors the rare chance to see these magnificent creatures in the wild. Lubok Kasai is the perfect escape for those wanting to reconnect with nature and experience the untouched beauty of Sarawak's rainforest.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1

Kuching / Lachau Bazaar / Batang Ai Lake / Nanga Sumpa

At 08:00 Hrs, your journey begins with a hotel pick-up in Kuching for a drive to the Batang Ai reservoir.

Along the way, enjoy a stop at Lachau Bazaar, where you can explore local shops and a small native market.

Lunch will be served at a local coffee shop before continuing the scenic drive.

You are expected to arrive at Batang Ai Lake between 13:30 to 14:00 Hrs, where you will board a longboat for an upriver journey to Nanga Sumpa.

Arrival at Nanga Sumpa is anticipated around 15:30 Hrs, depending on river conditions. Upon arrival, settle in at Borneo Adventure’s lodge, enjoy dinner, and visit the Nanga Sumpa longhouse.

Spend the evening on the ruai (common verandah) with the Iban people, learning about their culture, sharing stories, and sampling local rice wine before an overnight stay at Nanga Sumpa Lodge.

Day 2

Nanga Sumpa - Orang Utan Treks

Start the day with an early wake-up call before departing Nanga Sumpa at 06:30 Hrs for a jungle trekking to find orang utans.

Follow a trail selected by your guide based on recent orang utan or nest sightings, trekking through their habitat for 2-3 hours before returning to the lodge.

Enjoy a late breakfast, then embark on a short 1-hour trek around 11:00 Hrs to spot more orang utans. Alternatively, explore the Nanga Sumpa longhouse, visit a nearby farm, or relax at the lodge.

After lunch, unwind at the lodge, take a refreshing swim in the river, or enjoy some free time at your leisure.

At 16:00 Hrs, set out on another jungle walk near Nanga Sumpa to search for orang utans and nests.

End the day with dinner and an overnight stay at Nanga Sumpa Lodge.

Day 3

Nanga Sumpa / Enseluai Waterfall / Lubok Kasai

Start the day with breakfast before departing Nanga Sumpa at 07:00 Hrs - 08:00 Hrs for a trek along the rainforest trails near Sepulau. Keep an eye out for orangutans, pig-tailed macaques, hornbills, and a variety of birds, with orangutan nests often visible along the trails.

Return to Nanga Sumpa around midday and enjoy lunch at the lodge. Then, continue the adventure with an upriver longboat journey to the picturesque Enseluai Waterfall. Upon arrival, take time to relax, swim, and soak in the stunning rainforest surroundings.

Afterwards, travel along the Delok River and into the Lalang River by boat to reach Lubok Kasai Jungle Camp. Settle in and enjoy some downtime with options to swim in the river or simply embrace the serene rainforest atmosphere. Orangutans may occasionally be spotted in this area, especially at dusk or dawn.

End the day with dinner at the camp and a peaceful evening appreciating the tranquillity of the forest. If the weather permits, you can also join a short night walk near the lodge.

Day 4

Lubok Kasai / Orang Utan Treks

Begin the fourth day with breakfast before heading out on another trek in search of orangutans. Activities and trail selections will be tailored based on sightings from the previous day in discussion with your guide for the best chances for wildlife encounters.

Return to Lubok Kasai for lunch, and enjoy a leisurely afternoon to relax or explore the serene surroundings.

At 16:00 Hrs, set out on nearby forest trails for another opportunity to spot orangutans and other wildlife.

Return to the camp before dusk, ending the day with dinner and a peaceful overnight stay at Lubok Kasai Camp.

Day 5

Lubok Kasai / Kuching

Begin the day with breakfast at the camp.

At 08:30 Hrs, depart on a downstream journey to the Batang Ai Lake jetty, which takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours.

Continue the journey overland back to Kuching, with a lunch stop along the way. Arrival in Kuching is expected around 16:30 Hrs, where you will be dropped off at your hotel.
