Just a short drive and boat ride from Kuching, this trip takes you deep into one of Borneo’s most diverse ecosystems, where mangrove forests, coastal cliffs, and jungle trails are home to incredible wildlife.

This extended itinerary lets you trek the scenic Lintang Trail, spot proboscis monkeys, bearded pigs, silvered langurs, and hornbills, and head out on a night walk to search for flying lemurs, slow lorises, and palm civets.

Perfect for nature lovers and wildlife photographers, this Bako National Park tour gives you more chances to immerse yourself in Sarawak’s rich rainforest and see Borneo’s incredible wildlife up close.

About the Location

Bako National Park may be Sarawak’s smallest national park, but it’s packed with stunning landscapes and incredible biodiversity. Located on the southeast coast of Malaysian Borneo, this 2,727-hectare rainforest is a showcase of Borneo’s diverse ecosystems. Just an hour’s drive from Kuching, followed by an exciting longboat ride, Bako welcomes you with towering cliffs, lush rainforest, and rugged coastal scenery—a dramatic start to your adventure.

The national park is home to seven distinct ecosystems, from mangroves and dipterocarp forests to waterfalls and coastal cliffs. Well-marked nature trails lead to secluded beaches, panoramic viewpoints, and dense rainforests teeming with wildlife.

Bako is one of Borneo’s best wildlife-spotting destinations. With around 275 proboscis monkeys, you’re likely to see them swinging through trees or lounging in the mangroves. The park is also home to the bearded pig, often seen wandering freely, and the elusive silvered langur. Other wildlife includes flying lemurs, slow lorises, macaques, tarsiers, otters, mouse deer, and a variety of birds.

Nature Trails at Bako National Park

Tanjung Sapi
A short but steep 30-minute climb through cliffside vegetation leads to breathtaking views of Telok Assam, the South China Sea, and Santubong. Early mornings are the best time to hear proboscis monkeys crashing through the trees as they search for food.

Telok Paku
One of the best trails for spotting proboscis monkeys, especially in the early mornings or late afternoons. The trail winds through a cliffside forest before reaching a secluded beach, perfect for relaxing in peace.

Ulu Assam
This steep and adventurous trail requires hanging onto tree roots for balance, but the reward is spectacular views of Bako’s coastline. The trail passes through swamp forests before reaching a flat plateau, where proboscis monkeys are sometimes seen.

Telok Delima
An excellent trail for spotting proboscis monkeys, just a 45-minute walk from park HQ. Listen for the sound of leaves rustling or strange grunting noises—these might be proboscis monkeys moving through the trees.

Serait
A less-frequented trail great for spotting larger rainforest species. This 1.5-hour trek leads to the park boundary, offering a quiet, secluded hiking experience.

Telok Pandan Kecil & Telok Pandan Besar
One of Bako’s most popular trails, offering stunning views of Telok Assam from a high plateau lined with carnivorous pitcher plants. The trail continues to a clifftop viewpoint before descending to a secluded beach. Swimming is possible, but beware of monkeys trying to steal unguarded belongings.

Lintang
A well-known circuit trail that passes through nearly all of Bako’s vegetation types. The stretch between Ulu Assam and Serait is a great place to spot proboscis monkeys. A short detour leads to the Bukit Tambi viewpoint.

Tajor
This moderate trail passes through scrub and padang vegetation before leading to Tajor Waterfall, a small but scenic waterfall with a refreshing jungle pool. Best visited after heavy rain, the hike takes about 2.5 hours from park HQ.

Tanjung Rhu
A side trail branching off from Tajor, leading to rocky coastal headlands, wave-cut platforms, and rock pools. It takes about 2.5 hours from park HQ, or 45 minutes from Tajor junction.

Ulu Serait
A connecting trail between Lintang Trail and Bukit Gondol, passing through padang vegetation and swamp forests. The trek from Lintang junction to Bukit Gondol’s base takes about 1.5 hours.

Bukit Gondol
A semi-circular loop trail passing over Bukit Gondol, Bako’s highest point (266m). The summit offers panoramic views of Pulau Lakei and Muara Tebas. The full loop takes about 45 minutes.

Paya Jelutong
A shortcut trail for those avoiding the Bukit Gondol climb, passing through a freshwater swamp forest. The dominant Jelutong trees, commonly used for making pencils, make this short walk a unique experience.

Bukit Keruing
A connecting trail between Bukit Gondol and Tajor, passing through towering rainforest trees along the slopes of Bukit Keruing, Bako’s second-highest point. The trek from Paya Jelutong to Tajor Waterfall takes 1.5 hours.

Telok Sibur
A full-day trek that takes 3.5 hours from park HQ to the end of the trail. The trail first follows Tajor Waterfall before continuing another 45 minutes to a junction leading to Telok Sibur Beach, Bako’s longest beach. The final descent is steep, passing through mangroves and crossing a river before reaching the secluded shoreline.

Telok Limau
One of Bako’s longest treks, taking 6 to 7 hours from park HQ to the small beach at Telok Limau. The route crosses streams, climbs hills, and winds through swamp forests, offering breathtaking views of Muara Tebas peninsula. Trekkers can camp overnight or arrange a boat pickup.

Telok Keruin
A rarely used trail, usually done as a side trek from Telok Limau. The 45-minute descent takes hikers through mangrove forests and scrub vegetation, with four short side trails leading to viewpoints, a rock pool, and a deserted beach—one of the best in Bako.

Pulau Lakei
A small island with a beautiful white sand beach, guarded by a National Park station. Boat trips can be arranged with your boatman. A short walk from the beach leads to mysterious rock paintings.
