In the downtown area, you can get around quite easily on foot between hotels, restaurants, tour operators, markets, and the tourism office. For longer trips, driving will be necessary.
Local buses and taxis are available in Kota Kinabalu city centre. It is however advisable and a normal practice for tour operators to arrange most of the overland transfers.
Car rental services are available in Kota Kinabalu only. Types of vehicles for hire varies broadly from basic compact sedans to 4X4 off-road vehicles, vans and coaches depending on your travel needs. If you decide to rent a car, it is advisable for you to pre-arrange with tour operators before your arrival. Contact Amazing Borneo Tours for car rental rates.
The ferry terminal is located at Jesselton Point, north of downtown Kota Kinabalu. Ferries depart from Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal to Labuan and onward to Brunei. Express boats also ply the short distance the ferry terminal and the islands in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park nearby (Pulau Gaya between, Pulau Sapi, Pulau Manukan, Pulau Sulug and Pulau Mamutik). This ferry terminal is also the departure point to Manukan Island Resort and Gayana Eco Resort. Ferry terminal operates daily from 6am to 6pm with the last boat departing from the terminal at 4:30 pm and the last boat departing from the islands at 5:00 pm.
The only railway service in operation in Borneo is in Sabah. It runs from Tanjung Aru railway station in Kota Kinabalu to Beaufort and Tenom. The journey to Beaufort takes less than 2 hours, and to Tenom about 5 hours. The ride by railcar through the Padas River gorge to Tenom is particularly interesting to visitors as it offers a refreshing alternative to enjoy the scenery.
Kota Kinabalu International Airport is Sabah’s busiest airport and second only to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. When traveling to Sandakan or Tawau, travellers can conveniently fly from Kota Kinabalu International Airport or Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
