Day 1 Canada Hill / Miri Petroleum Museum / Grand Old Lady / Tua Pek Kong Temple / Local Market / Piasau Nature Reserve (Optional) 09:00 Hrs / 13:00 Hrs: Your exciting day tour begins with a convenient pick-up from Miri Airport. This day trip will take you to several sites of historical and cultural significance in Miri, first beginning at Canada Hill (also known as Power Hill), offering the best views of the city and coast. Canada Hill is home to Miri’s Petroleum Museum, with various exhibits depicting the history and development of Oil & Gas in Malaysia. The main attraction is the historical Oil Well No. 1, known as the Grand Old Lady, where Sarawak Shell first struck oil in the early 20th century. Grand Old Lady was responsible for producing more than 650,000 barrels of oil across 60 years, from 1910 to 1972. Make a stop at Tua Pek Kong Temple, the oldest temple in Miri and one of the few survivors of World War II Japanese bombings. The 110-year-old temple has born witness to Miri’s history and growth from a small fishing village to the thriving resort city it is today. Visit some local shops and markets for herbs, handicrafts, and Kek Lapis Sarawak – Sarawak Layer Cake – a local confectionery known for its layered structure, vibrant colours, and varying flavours. (Optional Activity) Visit the Piasau Nature Reserve, featuring a Hornbill Conservation Centre dedicated to the preservation and protection of the iconic hornbill species native to Borneo. Located along the Miri coastline, the site was originally a recreational area for Shell Oil Company employees in the 1920s and has since been transformed into a vital refuge for diverse flora and fauna with its mangrove forests, tidal flats, and estuaries. 12:00 Hrs / 16:00 Hrs: Transfer to your hotel for check-in.
