Day 1 - Tamparuli Town / Jambatan Tamparuli / Market Visit / Borneo Traditional Cooking Class / UINAH Factory Tour

09:00 Hrs: Begin your day with a convenient pick-up from Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort and embark on a scenic 30-minute journey to Tamparuli Town, a charming destination steeped in local culture and history. Pick-up and transfer can be arranged for guests staying in the Kota Kinabalu region as well. 

09:30 Hrs: Take a leisurely stroll across the iconic Jambatan Tamparuli, a suspension bridge rich in local folklore, so beloved that it has even inspired a famous Sabahan song and stage play. Marvel at the bridge’s cultural significance and the breathtaking views of the surrounding area. 

09:45 Hrs: Head to the bustling Tamparuli Market. As you explore the market, your guide will introduce you to Sabah’s unique local produce, offering an insightful introduction to the key ingredients used in traditional dishes. 

10:15 Hrs: Just a short walk away is the Bijan Café & Guest House, where your cooking class will be held. Upon arrival, enjoy refreshing welcome drinks as you prepare for your hands-on culinary experience. 

10:30 Hrs: Dive into an authentic cooking experience! Guests can choose from three exclusive cooking class packages tailored to their preferences: 

  • Package A (Chicken): Prepare dishes like Ayam Rendang and learn to make traditional Nasi Linopot, Losun, Hinava, and Penjaram
  • Package B (Beef): Perfect for meat lovers, this option features Daging Masak Salai alongside signature Sabahan recipes. 
  • Package C (Vegetarian): A plant-based option featuring Kerabu Paku Pakis or Losun, Bambangan or Tuhau, and other Sabahan specialties. 

12:15 Hrs: Pause your culinary adventure for an immersive cultural experience with local artist Herman Duang. Learn the traditional craft of woodcut art printing and take home your own rice paper print as a memorable souvenir of your journey. 

13:00 Hrs: Indulge in a delicious buffet lunch featuring the dishes you prepared alongside a variety of local delights crafted by the talented team at Bijan Café. Savour the authentic flavours of Sabah in a warm and welcoming setting. 

13:30 Hrs: After lunch, visit the UINAH Factory, a proudly Sabahan brand renowned for crafting beverages using native ingredients like ginger, roselle, and wild honey. Since its founding in 2019, UINAH has gained acclaim for its bold flavors and dedication to sustainable practices.

14:00 Hrs: Upon arrival at the UINAH Factory, gear up with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) following a quick safety briefing. During the tour, you’ll gain insight into UINAH’s product creation process, machinery, and dedication to sustainability. Participate in a hands-on activity such as cleaning ginger or roselle flowers, sample their signature products, and shop for your favourites to take home. 

15:00 Hrs: Wrap up your adventure with a relaxing 30-minute transfer back to Shangri-La Rasa Ria or your Kota Kinabalu hotel (1-hour drive). Your unforgettable day of culinary and cultural exploration comes to an end.

  • Cancellation Policy: Free cancellation or rescheduling up to 48 hours before the tour date. No refunds for cancellations made less than 48 hours prior to the tour. 
  • This tour involves light walking and hands-on activities. Guests should ensure they are comfortable with the level of physical activity required. 
  • Effective as of 1st September 2017, the Tourism and Culture Ministry of Malaysia will be implementing a Malaysian Tourism Tax (TTx). Foreign tourists will be required to pay a flat rate of RM10/room/night regardless of accommodation star level. The TTx is to be paid upon check-in. Malaysians or permanent residents residing in Malaysia are exempted from TTx and is required to present a valid identification upon check-in for the exemption.
