Sample itinerary

Day 1 - Lahad Datu / Utan Rainforest Lodge / Nature Walk / Sunset River Cruise / Night Safari Drive

Begin your journey with a pick-up from Lahad Datu Airport, stopping at the office for check-in and registration. 

Travel 2.5 hours to the newly established Utan Rainforest Lodge in the Virgin Jungle Reserve of Sungai Kapur, featuring air-conditioned rooms, a restaurant, a dip pool, a bar, and a gift shop. 

After a warm welcome and lunch, embark on an introductory nature walk to explore the area's rich flora and fauna. 

As evening approaches, enjoy a sunset river cruise for wildlife observation, possibly spotting fireflies, followed by a night safari drive where you may encounter nocturnal creatures like civets, leopard cats, mouse deer, and moonrats.

Day 2 - Birdwatching / Morning River Cruise / Night Walk

Start your day with an early morning hike to Cuckoo Hide for birdwatching, with a chance to see the resident Bornean Ground Cuckoo. 

Following breakfast, take a river cruise along the Segama River, exploring the mangrove forests and looking out for wildlife like flying foxes and Irrawaddy Dolphins. 

Spend your afternoon relaxing at the lodge, enjoying the dip pool, bar, and other amenities, or exploring the information centre and souvenir shop. 

After dinner, set out on a guided night walk around the lodge to spot more nocturnal wildlife.

Day 3 - Morning Hike / Morning River Cruise / Sunset River Cruise

After breakfast, go on a short hike through the rainforest surrounding the lodge. 

Return for a river excursion along the coastline to search for more wildlife, followed by a leisurely lunch at the lodge. 

Take advantage of the plunge pool to cool off and visit the souvenir corner for some shopping. 

In the late afternoon, embark on an evening river safari, enjoying the peacefulness as the sun sets. 

After freshening up, enjoy dinner before ending the night with another night safari drive.

Day 4 - Check Out / Lahad Datu Airport

Savour a relaxed breakfast and a leisurely morning.

Before departing from Lahad Datu, you may ask your driver to bring you to a local shop to buy "adidas kampung" (rubber trekking shoes) – the recommended shoes for trekking through Borneo tropical rainforest. 

  • Please ensure you are holding air ticket to Lahad Datu.
