KOTA KINABALU: A moderate 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit Ranau at local time 9:06pm on 8 March 2018. Tremors were felt in some parts of Sabah such as Kudat, Papar, Kota Marudu, Kota Belud, throughout Ranau, and Kota Kinabalu city.

As a safety precaution, Sabah Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun has ordered the temporary suspension of Mount Kinabalu climbing activities.

130 climbers who were at Panalaban (3272m a.s.l.) on the mountain at the time of tremor, have all safely descended to Kinabau Park HQ or Kota Kinabalu city by 4:20am on 9 March. According to Sabah Parks Director, Dr Jamili Nais, everyone was safe and there were no reported incidents of damage or casualties. Checks are being conducted by Park Rangers along the summit trails.

The public will be notified once the climbing suspension is lifted.
