The sea stack at Bako National Park in Kuching, Sarawak collapsed on 13 February 2024. The incident was reported by park guide Mr Paul Matthew.

Also known as the "Cobra Head Sea Stack" due to its resemblance, the formation was composed of sandstone and stood as a testament to the park's rich geological history, sculpted by millions of years of erosion.

While the precise cause remains undetermined, recent adverse weather conditions and strong waves are suspected to have played a role in the collapse.

Tuan Abang Arabi bin Abg Aimran, CEO of the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), expressed shock and sadness upon the news. He acknowledged the significance of the sea stack as a natural landmark and its contribution to the local tourism industry, particularly for boat operators.

The Collapse Will Not Affect Bako's Popularity

This event follows the 2020 collapse of another prominent rock formation, the "Horse Head" cliff at Tusan Beach, Miri. According to Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, while there are plans for the reconstruction of the "Horse Head" cliff, similar efforts for the Bako's sea stack are deemed unlikely due to its location in the open sea.

However, he remains optimistic about the park's future, emphasising that the collapse "will not affect the popularity of the Bako National Park or cause the attraction of the park to diminish". He continues that the authorities are committed to identifying other iconic attractions within the park to ensure it continues to attract local and international tourists.

The collapse of the sea stack serves as a reminder of the ongoing geological processes that shape our environment. While its presence will be missed, Bako National Park's diverse ecosystem and remaining geological marvels offer an opportunity to appreciate the wonders of nature and their dynamic transformations.
