Sample itinerary

Day 1 - Lahad Datu / Danum Valley Field Centre / Night Safari Drive

09:30 Hrs: Start your adventure with a convenient pick-up from your hotel lobby or Lahad Datu Airport for a 2½ hour journey to Danum Valley Conservation Area (DVCA), passing by diverse and ancient forest landscapes. 

Register and check in at the DVCA Reception & Information Building, followed by a quick briefing from your guide. 

Enjoy lunch at the dining hall while you discuss with your guide on your activities for the next few days. 

Please take note that this itinerary only serves as a sample. You are encouraged to consult with your guide on tailoring your itinerary according to your interests. 

Relax or take a power nap before embarking on a mid-afternoon walk around the centre where you may have the opportunity to spot wildlife like orangutan, red leaf monkeys, sambar deer, hornbills, and more. 

19:00 Hrs: Dinner at the Dining Hall. 

After dinner, head out for a 4x4 night safari drive as the nocturnal world comes alive in the dark. Here, you can sit back and relax while your guide scans the dark for flickering eyes.

Day 2 - Nature & Wildlife Observation / Guided Trek / Night Jungle Walk

06:00 Hrs: Early morning nature and wildlife observation walk to experience the rainforest’s ancient ecosystem. 

Return to the centre for breakfast. 

After breakfast, you have the option to venture out on a nature trail or spend the morning free and easy. 

Spend the late morning unwinding before lunch. 

After lunch, head off on another trek through the forest. There are various trails around the centre that you can explore – your nature guide will discuss this with you. 

Return to the centre in the evening, just in time to watch the sunset! 

After dinner, venture out on a night walk with your guide in search of nocturnal wildlife.

Day 3 - Danum Valley Exploration / Night Jungle Walk

Immerse yourself in the 130-million-year-old rainforest with a full day of nature exploration, wildlife spotting, and bird watching. 

Explore different trails around the centre or challenge yourself to a longer trail depending on your fitness level, as assessed by your guide. 

Return to the centre in the late evening to freshen up and have dinner. 

After dinner, embark on another night walk with your guide.

Day 4 - Nature & Wildlife Observation / Night Jungle Walk

Another full day dedicated to exploring the forest with your guide, with continuous opportunities to encounter wildlife and enjoy bird watching. 

Some of the trails may take you to a riverside beach along Segama River – did you know there were beaches in the rainforest? 

In the evening, return to the centre to prepare for dinner. 

After dinner, you may head out on your last night walk for a last chance to spot nocturnal wildlife.

Day 5 - Bukit Atur Sunrise Drive / Early Morning Trek / Departure

Rise early for a 4x4 drive at dusk to catch the sunrise atop Bukit Atur.

Alternatively, you have the option to embark on a final morning jungle walk instead.

Return to the centre for breakfast and to pack up your belongings.

  • Please ensure you are holding an air ticket to Lahad Datu. 
  • Cell phone coverage is available but limited depending on weather conditions and satellite function. Be prepared to have no coverage for some of your stay. 
  • DVFC electricity is powered by generators. The generators will shut down from 23:00 Hrs - 07:00 Hrs. Battery-powered lamps are provided in each room, but you may wish to bring your own flashlight. 
  • Effective as of 1st September 2017, the Tourism and Culture Ministry of Malaysia will be implementing a Malaysian Tourism Tax (TTX). Foreign tourists will be required to pay a flat rate of MYR 10 per room per night regardless of accommodation star level. The TTx is to be paid upon check-in. Malaysians or permanent residents residing in Malaysia are exempted from TTx and are required to present valid identification upon check-in for the exemption.

  • Before departing from Lahad Datu, you may ask your driver to bring you to a local shop to buy "adidas kampung" (rubber trekking shoes) – the recommended shoes for trekking through Borneo tropical rainforest.
