Overview of Location

About Kampung Kiau (Kiau Village)
Kiau Village, located some 90 km away from the bustling Kota Kinabalu City life, is a valley purified with its fresh air of jungle breeze and surrounded by the serenity of the majestic Mount Kinabalu standing tall and proud. The Dusuns are the main tribe of Kiau, who are mostly Christians ever since the missionary was brought in during the British Colonial time. The villagers however still practice their traditional custom and speak their mother-tongue, which is the Dusun dialect.

At the elevation of 900 meters above sea level, Kiau is blessed with rich soil for agriculture and are well known for its sweet pineapple produce, other harvest includes highland vegetables and hill paddy. Hill paddy has been planted since their ancestral time, and it is carried out the traditional way ever since with common hill paddy types such as Tadong and Silou planted to ensure that it does not become extinct.

Though the villagers of Kiau are mainly farmers, there are some who hold permanent jobs as mountain guides that escort tourists up and down Mount Kinabalu.  Growing up by the foot of the mountain, they were taken up Mount Kinabalu at a very young age by their parents to work part-time as porters during school holidays. This sparks up these young boys’ interest and exposure in tourism that eventually led them to be mountain guides.
